127 Seniors host Christmas dinner

CROSSVILLE — The seniors of 127 South met Dec. 14 for a big day of bingo and their Christmas dinner. Bingo prizes were furnished by Bob Folger of State Farm and the senior center. Wendell Lester called the bingo numbers.

Fred Zoeller, president, called the regular meeting to order with Arlene Simmons giving the prayer, and Tom Simmons leading the pledge to the flag.

Nancy Fincher gave the sunshine report and asked that everyone keep the following in their prayers: Jim Brennan, Mary Hirsch, Kathleen Zuk, Mario Gambaccini, Ruby Barnes, Pat Mount, Dot Conklin, T.C. Lewis, Pat Ferguson, Dee Crawford and the military.

Jan Neitzke gave the treasurer's report for November and reminded members of upcoming trips. March 9 will be a trip to Renfro Valley, KY, for a variety show and the cost will be $65, which includes dinner. April 15-19 will be the trip to Memphis/Tunica, and there is one seat available for that trip. Two bus loads of seniors went to Pigeon Forge earlier this week for a Christmas show, and everyone enjoyed the Smoky Mountain Opry along with the good food at Tony Roma's.

Fred reminded everyone that the center will be closed Dec. 28 and there will be no bluegrass music Dec. 27. Bring in items for the 127 sale and keep buying Kroger coupons.

After the Christmas gift exchange, members were entertained by D.J. Garrison and his wife, Donna. There were lots of Christmas songs and some were sing-alongs. After the table blessing, they enjoyed the catered meal of ham and sliced beef with sides by Ken Soncrant.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
