Fair Park Senior Center offering SilverSneakers

By Donna Rule / Chronicle contributor

Fair Park is proud to announce a partnership with Healthways, Inc., to offer the SilverSneakers exercise program to qualified participants starting in May 2009. SilverSneakers offers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and socially oriented programming that allows older adults to take greater control of their health. SilverSneakers is offered as a benefit through many health programs, including Humana and AARP. If you belong to a Medicare health plan that offers SilverSneakers, you can enroll — at no cost — in the classes at Fair Park starting the first full week in May. The classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. beginning Tuesday, May 5.

Fair Park will initially offer the classic “SilverSneakers Muscular Strength & Range of Movement” class, which uses hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball for resistance work, along with a chair for seated and/or standing support. In this class, you will have lots of fun, moving to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills.

A SilverSneakers representative will be at Fair Park on Friday, May 1, at 10:15 a.m. to give a presentation about this new program and talk to interested participants about enrollment. Among the subjects that will be addressed are the benefits of enrolling in a SilverSneakers class as well as identifying health plans that offer SilverSneakers enrollment free to its members.

SilverSneakers is a registered mark of Healthways, Inc.

To keep informed about Fair Park’s activities and to learn about its corporate partnerships, you can visit the center Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can also visit the center’s Web site at www.fairparkseniorcenter.org to keep up-to-date on the latest programs and activities that are being offered as well as online versions of the center’s monthly newsletter “Newsline.” Take advantage of the resources that Fair Park offers — get involved, and become part of the fun!
