It’s island time at Fair Park

CROSSVILLE — If you didn’t get to go to a tropical island this summer, at least you can pretend with other seniors at Fair Park this Friday morning.

The morning will start off with the pleasant soft spoken native born islander from the Caribbean island of Barbuda and entertainer Jay Fox. Many who have heard him have remarked on the honest feelings and emotions he paints as he sings. He will be singing his beautiful songs starting at 9:45 a.m.

He has been on tour all summer, promoting his wonderful autobiography Triumph Over Tragedy, which has now gone worldwide and is available on Kindle. Come Friday and get your book autographed! United Grocery Outlet will be sponsoring bingo at 10:30 a.m., and lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. with a donation to the New Horizon Adult Day Care.

They have been fortunate to have Hawaiian-born Noelani DeRosset, teaching a hula dance class most of this summer at the center. The ladies have really enjoyed the experience. There is a lot more to learning how to hula than you might think. They will be dancing just after lunch on Friday. DeRosset says it is an important tradition to only have dancing after everyone has eaten. She has been in Polynesian shows worldwide most of her life and stared with Elvis in two of his movies. She will also be dancing on Friday. If it sounds like fun, then come to Fair Park.

Saturday night country dances are coming to Fair Park, with Tom Fincher and the Southern Pride Band! Fincher is planning to have a special guest every week to join them. The first Saturday night dance will be Aug. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m., with $5 at the door.

Just a reminder that Senior Day at the Fair is Wednesday, Aug. 28, starting at 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cumberland County Community Fairgrounds. If you are wondering where the Fair Park Senior Center is located, it is across the street from the Cumberland County Community Complex at 1433 Livingston Rd. in Crossville and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit their website to learn more (http://www.fairparkseniorcenter.org) or call 484-7416.
