Get a jump on holiday shopping at Friends of the Library book sale

CROSSVILLE — It’s not too early to start holiday shopping. One of the best places to fill your gift needs is the book sale by the Friends of the Art Circle Public Library.  The sale will be held at the library in the Cumberland Meeting Room on Friday, Oct. 25, at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday’s sale will feature the popular $1 per bag event.

Hard cover books will be priced at 50 cents and paperbacks at 25 cents. Some special editions and best sellers will be priced slightly higher. On Saturday books will be sold for $1 a bag.

The items for sale include: children’s books, novels, mysteries, paperbacks, CDs, VHS, nonfiction, bargain books, sets, best sellers, first editions and parent resource books for homeschoolers. Everyone is sure to find something they want and help the library at the same time. Come early as books go fast in the morning.

They will also hold a Bling Sale Dec. 22.

The friends organization uses all money it collects to benefit the library. Every time someone buys anything at the book sale or at the store they are helping the library acquire new volumes. The book store is open whenever the library is open and is between the cafe and the elevator. If you join the Friends, dues go straight to the library. They also participate in the Kroger Cares and Food City gift card programs.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and are open to the public. They always have refreshments and an interesting program at 10 a.m. The next meeting will take place Nov. 7. Please join them.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
