Christian Counseling Center to offer group therapy

CROSSVILLE — Christian Counseling of Cumberland County announces issue-specific therapy groups, beginning the first week in November. The initial four groups will focus on panic disorder (panic attacks), depression, marital conflict and marital enrichment. Group therapy has many advantages for participants — opportunity to form supportive relationships, knowing their experiences are shared by others and seeing their own issues from multiple perspectives.

Groups for panic disorder and depression will include at least one informative session for family members. This should promote their understanding of the disorder, help to identify their own stressors and encourage them to become an active part of their loved one’s treatment. Marital groups will focus on establishing healthy communication, bringing closure to past issues and dealing with stressors.

Groups will meet weekly under the direction of a trained therapist. An initial meeting with the therapist is required one week prior to the start of each group. Individual groups will be limited to six to eight participants, and marital groups will be limited to four to six couples. To create an atmosphere of safety and respect, groups will be closed after the first session, with no additional participants admitted. Due to limited space, interested families are encouraged to call the Christian Counseling Center soon.

Christian Counseling Center, a nonprofit agency, provides mental health and relationship counseling services by qualified professionals to residents of Cumberland County and the surrounding area with fees based on family income. The Christian Counseling Center has been serving children, teens, adults and couples since 2002. For more information, visit www.cccotp.org. To make an appointment, call 707-8200.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
