Self-image/self-esteem workshop set

Just in time for fall, Christian Counseling Center of Cumberland County will be presenting a one-day Self-Image and Self-Esteem Workshop for girls, ages nine through 12 or fourth through sixth grade. Topics for the day will include increasing your self-worth and respecting both yourself and others.

Kathryn Smylie Burns, M.Ed., will be the workshop presenter. Burns believes that everyone can benefit from self-esteem building skills, and it is especially needed by those entering puberty and dealing with perfection pressures from social media.

Burns is new to the Christian Counseling Center of Cumberland County. She received her training at Middle Tennessee State University and holds a dual master’s degree in school counseling and mental health. Her training and experience emphasize skills in play therapy, family therapy, group therapy and therapy for disordered eating and other addiction issues. She is able to see clients who are three and older. She is also able and willing to work with families.

The workshop will be at the United Fund building, 348 Taylor St., on Aug. 10. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and will end at 2 p.m. The cost is $15 for the day. Each participant is asked to bring a sack lunch. Drinks will be provided. Space is limited. You can hold a place in this workshop by calling the Christian Counseling Center office at 707-8200. The deadline to get your application and fees paid is Aug. 5.

  • AROUND THE TOWN: The Easter egg hunt that never was

The Easter Bunny should be able to deliver his baskets in pretty nice weather this weekend. The Good Friday and Easter holiday weekend should feature much warmer temperatures than we had earlier this week when snow showers fell on Cumberland County. Cumberland County students were released Tuesday for spring break, but their last day of school for the week found snow and ice falling from the sky and temperatures in the 20s. Students will return to class on Monday.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
