The Fair Park Senior Center Eight Ball Pool League has finished for the season. They have been playing every Wednesday since October. The outcome is that Gene Medley, Tony Gradle, and Willard Reynolds are the winners. All the guys who play pool at the center are winners. Most of them are at the center ready to start their day with a game every morning. The pool room is open to all seniors who are 55-plus from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Come and play a game.
Tex Ritter Van Winkle was named by his mom, who loved country music. Tex, who is legally blind, learned how to play music from the School of the Blind. He has been teaching keyboard at the Fair Park Senior Center during the past year. He will now also teach a guitar class, which will start Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m. He is donating his talent, so the class is free. If you have a guitar sitting in the corner and have always wanted to learn to play, now is the time.
Most seniors suffer from arthritis in their joints, but relief from pain medicines are just not good for you. The National Arthritis Foundation has done a lot of research on the disease. They are finding more proof everyday of the benefit exercise has in relieving the pain. The reason is really very simple. The movement of exercise causes the warm blood to move in and around the joint. This heat from the blood is basically what eases the pain.
The UT Extension Agent for Cumberland County, Kelli Bottoms, has been certified by the National Arthritis Foundation to teach the arthritis exercise. She will start another six-week class Tuesday, May 13, at 3 p.m. at the senior center. You might be surprise; just give it a try. It is a free class.
Singer Charles McElroy will be at the senior center this Friday morning. He found his talent late in life and does a great job. He enjoys singing the old Dean Martin, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra songs. He recently has enjoyed singing more of the country songs since he moved to Tennessee. A lot of folks have enjoyed listening to him at the different Palace events, at R&B Café and at Fairfield Glade. Come and enjoy yourself Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.
