Members welcome Sounds of Country to 127 Senior Center

CROSSVILLE — On June 21, members gathered together at the 127 South Senior Citizens Center to socialize with coffee, goodies and chit chat. They played billiards, dominos and bingo, with Arlene Simmons calling the numbers. The bingo prizes were furnished by Buckeye Home Health.

The general meeting was opened by the president, Emil Neitzke, at 10:30 a.m., with Mary Brown giving the opening prayer and Larry Oslund leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Members were advised that there will be no get-together Friday, July 5.

Sunshine Lady Nancy Fincher gave her report on all the sick members, requesting that everyone keep them in their prayers as well as military personnel.

A request was made for members to bring in soft drinks for the corridor sale (Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sprite and Diet Sprite) and bottled water. Annie Lewis passed a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help in the kitchen for the corridor sale. Also needed are 3-4 cakes.

Lucy Elmore brought her sign-up sheet for all the volunteers who would like to help with the corridor sale and also requested baked goods for the bakery sale. The entertainment was provided by the Sounds of Country with Jack Melling, Rob Baker and Bill Scrimger — the members enjoyed listening to the great sounds."Danny Boy" was a favorite.

After the dinner prayer, all enjoyed a delicious pork loin roast prepared by the wonderful kitchen help, with salads and desserts furnished by the members.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
