Ring and sing at Fair Park

CROSSVILLE — The holidays are fast approaching. Fair Park Senior Center is starting a group to ring chimes as they sing. If you can clap your hands and stomp your foot at the same time, you should be able to handle this fun class. This group will be learning how to ring the chimes to the words as they sing.

Faye Brandon has been a chorus/music director for almost 74 years, since she was 12. She has worked most of those years at the First Baptist Church. So she is an expert at putting together Christmas sing-alongs. It should be fun, easy and you can make new friends. The group will be showing off their new learned talent at the senior center's Christmas program, which will be the first Friday in December. They will begin practicing starting on Wednesday, Oct 16, at 2 p.m. at the center. If this sounds like fun for you, then get signed up and ring your bells!

The 2013-'14 Winter Pool League for men and women will be starting this month at the Fair Park Senior Center. If you enjoy playing pool, you really should sign up in the pool room. It starts on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 12:30 p.m. For more information, call Mike Livingston at 788-6483.

Everyone needs to be ready to defend yourself these days. Larry Potter, a Vietnam War veteran, Marine with a fifth degree black belt, teaches all ages from all walks of life this important skill. He works personally with each of his students to react without having to think to defend their lives. He also does a walking cane technique with different phases you can achieve. He will be starting another 10-week Self Defense Class this Friday, Oct. 11, at 12:30. Bring a walking cane and check it out.

Ballroom dance lessons with Cheron Stenson and her dance partner David Sheffield will be starting on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Plan to get out this Saturday night for the Saturday night country dances at the senior center, with Tom Fincher and the Southern Pride Country Band. They also have a different special guest every week. It is for all adults. It will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Saturday night. Cost is $5 at the door.

Fair Park is the place for seniors to go to make friends, while learning, being active and having fun. It is at 1433 Livingston Rd. in Crossville and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with some evening classes. Visit their website to learn more at or call 484-7416.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
