2013 Upper Cumberland Senior Olympics dates to change

CROSSVILLE — Recently, the State Senior Olympics board met in Crossville for its annual retreat to discuss, among other things, some exciting changes in the state and district competition and qualifying process.

The annual state finals will move to June 21-27 in Williamson County. The move was necessary, since the Battle Ground Academy can only be secured for the use of the Senior Olympics during the high school athletic "dead period" for the foreseeable future.

Since the state finals were moved to a month earlier than traditionally held, the board decided that district competitions will be moved to the fall of each year. Each fall, athletes will have the opportunity to qualify at the district events for the next summer’s state finals. For example, in the fall of 2013, athletes will qualify for the 2014 state finals.

For the 2013 state finals only, the board decided that athletes will not be required to qualify at district level. This means that there will be no district events held for the 2013 state finals; those wishing to participate in the Senior Olympics for the year 2013 will go directly to state. Registration will be open at the state finals for all sports.

The event schedule and locations for the 2014 Upper Cumberland Senior Olympics will be announced at a later date. If you have any questions, contact Assistant Coordinator Donna Rule at 484-7416.

  • AROUND THE TOWN: The Easter egg hunt that never was

The Easter Bunny should be able to deliver his baskets in pretty nice weather this weekend. The Good Friday and Easter holiday weekend should feature much warmer temperatures than we had earlier this week when snow showers fell on Cumberland County. Cumberland County students were released Tuesday for spring break, but their last day of school for the week found snow and ice falling from the sky and temperatures in the 20s. Students will return to class on Monday.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
