Habitat dedicates 52nd home

Submitted

CROSSVILLE — Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 52nd home to Scott and Brooke McCowan Oct. 23. The new home will have 1,064 square feet of living space and the family will carry a zero-percent interest mortgage.

The McCowans will make this a home for their daughter, Kaliegh, and soon-to-be daughter, Kesley, due in December.

“The dedication was such an overwhelming and blessed experience for every hand that touched this home. I am thankful for our beautiful new house. God really blessed our family with this house, and it was hard work at times, but I appreciate it so much more,” said proud homeowner Brooke McCowan.

They have completed more than 500 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build the home, a basic requirement of Habitat for Humanity. The family will repay a zero-percent interest mortgage over a period of 20 years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” into affordable housing.

Habitat family partner, Karla Ogdan, proudly handed over the keys to the McCowans in front of family and volunteers who have been part of the homeownership process since the beginning.

She said, “We must never give up on our dreams or helping the dreams of others. I am so proud of what this family has accomplished.”

Tim Chesson, pastor of Faith Worship Center, presented the new homeowners with the Holy Bible, a traditional Habitat custom, which represents their conviction to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ to love one another. Chesson read 2 Chronicles 7:14-16 and admonished the family to make this home a house of prayer: “…if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.”
