The Cumberland Medical Center Wellness Complexes at Crossville and Fairfield Glade are participating in a coat drive to benefit the Crab Orchard Care Center. Coats and jackets will be accepted at the Wellness Complex at Crossville, 130 Woodmere Mall on Hwy. 127, and the Wellness Complex at Fairfield Glade, 130 Stonehenge Dr.
The Complexes' Tai Chi instructor, Drew Landrus, a long-time organizer supporting the Care Center, will see the coats are delivered to persons in need. Landrus was in the U.S. military for 20 years, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He was in special forces, as well as the Army space program. He worked an additional 13 years in the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office.
For additional information, about the Crab Orchard project, call the Crossville Complex at 456-8870. The Fairfield Glade Complex is at 707-8420.
The Crab Orchard Care Center, now in its ninth year of operation, is located at 87 Commerce St., Crab Orchard. The Care Center is open at 1 p.m. each Wednesday to provide food for those in need of supplementary support. On average 70 families are provided with approximately three days of food at each visit. Additionally, the Care Center provides weekend food through the Second Harvest Backpack Program for economically disadvantaged children attending either Crab Orchard or Pine View Elementary Schools.
Beginning in January 2014, the Care Center will work with the St. Mary’s Legacy Foundation of Knoxville to provide a twice-monthly free mobile medical clinic for persons without medical insurance or the means to pay for care.
According to Landrus, the Care Center needs canned food items, winter coats and financial support. The canned food items and winter coats can be dropped off at either of the Wellness Complexes. Checks for financial support should be made out to the Crab Orchard Care Center and sent directly to the Crab Orchard Care Center, P.O. Box 274, Crab Orchard, TN 37723.
