County fire department book pre-publication orders being taken now

CROSSVILLE — A history of the 16 Cumberland County fire stations and volunteers through the years is now being offered for pre-orders. The book is  hard cover, 600 pages on acid free paper. Included are the county court minutes pertaining to the formation of the countywide fire department; 1975 TVA and Volunteer Electric magazines with stories of the fire department's formation; interviews with various persons; photos of the stations with short histories; clips of newspaper articles; and 211 pages of fire department statistics listing fire fighters and their service records. All proceeds from the book sales will go to the Cumberland County Fire Department.

Some interviews are funny, others are heart-wrenching, but all of them tell the story of people who have given volunteer service to the citizens of the community and other places through the past 40 years. Interviews include Robert Austin, Gary Blaylock, Everett Bolin Jr., Tommy Button, Kenneth Carey Jr., Terry and Miriam Carter and Derek Carter, James Collins, Bobby DeRossett, Jeff and V.J. Dodson, Doug and Mike Findley, Keith Garrison, Lonnie Green, John W. Hall, Josh Ireland, Tom, Margaret and Lynn Isham, Trevor and Melissa Kerley, Kenny Kilgore, Eugene H. Parsons, Robert and Nancy Patterson, Earl Sevier, Mike W. Turner, Nick Warner, Clyde Winningham and Joe Wood.

As an example, in their interview, Smokey and Nancy Patterson told about one of the ice storms that closed Interstate 40 through Crab Orchard. People were housed in a church, but some stranded motorists were allergic to dogs. The Pattersons took the pets and their owners in their home for two to three days. Nancy said they had about 20 dogs in their house, but it was a real miracle because none of the dogs growled, barked or bit any other dogs or people. After the travelers were gone, the Patterson's found thank you notes that had been left all over their house.

The books will be delivered in mid-May. If you have already signed up to receive books, send your checks as instructed below. Thank you.

  • Gypsy Rose to visit Fair Park

The Cumberland County Playhouse is currently performing the award-winning Broadway play “Gypsy.” A great American story set during the 1920s fading vaudeville circuit, "Gypsy" portrays the rise of famed burlesque performer and stage mother Gypsy Rose Lee as she journeys across the country with her mother and sister during a time when Vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. The complex character of Rose could be described as bold and brassy, as she steamrolls everyone in her way to turn her daughters June and Louise into child stars.
