It's fair time in Cumberland County!

CROSSVILLE — "Where Farm Meets Fun" is this year's theme for the Cumberland County Fair. So make plans now to bring yourself, family and friends to some of the daily events or an evening of entertainment and fun.

Again this year, you will find the UT Extension County Family and Community Education (FCE) Clubs managing the Country Store Restaurant to serve fairgoers. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with offerings of hotdogs, pulled pork barbecue, coleslaw, pinto beans and cornbread, coffee, soft drinks and tea all day. Grilled steak sandwiches will be offered during the evenings. Do not overlook homemade desserts available to top off your meal.

There is air-conditioning and comfortable seating at the Country Store to enhance the fair experience. Before leaving, check out the crafts being displayed for viewing and buying in a section of the store. If you have craft items you would like to sell in the Country Store., stop by the Extension Office before the fair to get your tags. There is a craft workshop scheduled for Oct. 8, to be held at the Country Store. Consider picking up some information concerning this countywide event.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
