Seniors enjoyed Mackinac Island trip

CROSSVILLE — The meeting of the 127 Seniors on Sept. 21 began with bingo at 9:30 a.m. Prizes were donated for the game by Dr. M. Stewart Galloway, of Cumberland Eye Center in Fairfield Glade. An enjoyable time was had by the members.

The meeting was opened by vice president Mary Bohrman at 10:30 a.m. Jan Neitzke gave the report on members that were sick or recuperating from various surgeries. Ron Mansavage and Jim Visage are recovering at home now, and President Emil Neitzke was not feeling well. She also told them of the passing of one of their members who had been ill for some time.

She then gave a brief report on the good time that everyone had at the first bus trip to Mackinac Island, and she will be taking the second bus load to Mackinac Island on Sunday. The weather was beautiful for the first trip other than one rainy night and some fog. The day on Mackinac Island couldn’t have been prettier, but the weather was taking a turn for colder weather as they were leaving. So the second bus members were advised to bring heavier coats.

The entertainers were introduced as Judy Fistler and Sandy and Paul Thomas. They entertained the group with a wonderful assortment of songs, and Paul entertained everyone with his harmonica.

Following the entertainment, Carol Kirkland escorted the entertainers to lunch, which was a fine spread of spaghetti and meatballs as well as various complimentary dishes and desserts brought in by the members. No one went home hungry.

Members invite folks to come and join them for a fun time of bingo and games on Fridays, and they always have great entertainers for your enjoyment. Remember visitors are welcome, and, if you like you, can join the center.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
