CROSSVILLE — One of the best ways an artist can acquire successful painting techniques is to learn from a master instructor. Internationally recognized artist-instructor John Simms will offer a seven-session acrylic and oil painting class at the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC).

Aspiring artists of all technical skill levels, from beginner through advanced, will benefit from Simms' class and are encouraged to attend. To help participants improve their skill levels, Simms will demonstrate techniques particular to each medium as well as helping participants perfect their methods of drawing and design. He will provide individual guidance as each class participant works on their own project using either oil or acrylic paint on a surface of canvas or board. Whether a participant’s reference material is a portrait, landscape or still life taken from a book, photograph or magazine clipping, the reference should be 5"by 7" or larger.

The seven-session class will move from the general to specific depending on each participant’s project and skill level. After each participant properly prepares the painting surface, Simms will initially address design and drawing skills and then focus on the application of oil or acrylic paint. Participants are asked to bring their own art supplies and a notebook. There will be ample time throughout the seven-week session to complete a project provided participants also work on their own between classes. In other words, they should be prepared to learn in class and practice at home.

The seven-session acrylic and oil painting class is scheduled for the following dates and times: Saturday, Feb. 1 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.); Saturday, Feb. 8 (10 a.m. to noon); Tuesday, Feb. 11 (1 to 3 p.m.); Saturday, Feb. 15 (10 a.m. to noon); Saturday, Feb. 22 (10 a.m. to noon); Tuesday, Feb. 25 (1 to 3 p.m.); and Saturday, March 1 (10 a.m. to noon). In addition, an optional make-up session is scheduled for Saturday, March 8 (10 a.m. to noon). The cost of the seven-session class is $119 for members or $154 for non-members.
