Man of La Mancha and King and I casts to visit seniors

— The dramatic musical Man of La Mancha takes the Adventure Theater stage, which is transformed into a Spanish prison, in 1930s Spain, during the Spanish Civil War, where an idealistic, perhaps foolish writer like Cervantes waits to be tried, with fellow prisoners.

The remarkable Jason Ross changes into Don Quixote, the Man of La Mancha. He battles 16th century windmills, dances with gypsies, woos his “lady” and follows his quest to become a valiant knight in this play within a play. It is a heartwarming, moving story of honor, friendship, a wise “fool” and the power of hope... and it has inspired millions to dare to dream their own impossible dreams with faithful servant Sancho, played by tenor Gregory Pendzick. Man of La Mancha is directed by Britt Hancock and is rated PG-13 (for onstage violence) and runs through Sept. 27.

Playhouse sweetheart Lindy Pendzick will return to the senior center as she plays Tuptim, along with Herman Sebek and Adam Ignacio, in the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic The King and I. It originally opened on Broadway in 1951, with Yul Brynner and won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Actor. The play and the movie have captured the hearts of millions with the charming story of the British governess brought into the court of Siam to tutor the king's many children. The king treasured his native Asian traditions, yet sought recognition and acceptance for Siam in the modern 19th century world. The story is made more special with favorites, "Getting to Know You," "I Whistle a Happy Tune" and more.

Along with a great cast of more than 70, it will be playing the rest of this month until Aug. 30. Nationally recognized regional theater director, Amy London is directing the show. It is rated G.

All seniors are welcome to come  to Fair Park Senior Center this Friday and meet Lindy Pendzick and Adam Ignacio, who will be singing songs from The King and I, and Jason Ross and Greg Pendzick who will sing a couple of songs from Man of La Mancha. The Cumberland County Playhouse is always a real treat and a cool place to take your visitors this summer.
