DAR helps you find roots to your family tree

CROSSVILLE — It can be frustrating when researching your family tree. However, there is no need to get discouraged. The Crab Orchard Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution can help.

The chapter will be holding a genealogy workshop at the Art Circle Library on Jan. 18, 2014. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for coffee and donuts. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m., with Dr. Dennis West speaking on DNA and its use in genealogy. Dr. West is a member of the International Society of Genetic Genealogy and a professor at the University of Tennessee.

Following his presentation, Steve Cotham, collections manager for the Calvin McClung Library and History Center in Knoxville, will speak. He will be speaking about the resources available at the McClung Library and History Center. Cotham is also a published author.

Then a boxed lunch will be served. After lunch Gordon Belt from the Tennessee State Archives will speak on the resources and aides available at the state archives. To end the day, they will have Darla Brock from the state archives. She will speak about Civil War records and Southern Claims Commission records.

There will also be tables with DAR genealogists set up in the back of the room to answer questions and offer suggestions on breaking through those brick walls and finding those illusive ancestors. They will have tables set up at the entrance for local genealogy groups to hand out information. Two genealogy book publishers have been invited to come and set up tables with their merchandise.

Tickets can be purchased for $20 at First National Bank on Peavine Rd., Hilliard Lyons in Fairfield Glade or by calling Joyce Ernst at 788-1457 or Marsha Martin at (800) 890-5596.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
