Events planned at Cumberland Mtn. State Park


CROSSVILLE — Cumberland Mountain State Park has several special programs planned. All programs are considered PG-13, which means parental guidance is recommended.

Thursday, May 30

9 a.m. — Homesteads Tower Museum: Meet outside the park office to carpool over to the Historic Homesteads Tower to learn some of the area's rich history. Get a bird’s eye view of the Homesteads as you climb to the top of the tower. Cost is $2 for children ages 6-12 and $4 for adults (bring money for old-timey souvenirs).

11 a.m. — Boat Building: Meet at the amphitheater to see who can build the strongest aluminum foil boat.

2 p.m. — Pinecone Birdfeeders: Meet Naturalists Kelsey Whitefield and Justin Williams at shelter 1 to make tasty treats for feathery friends.

4 p.m. — Ultimate Paddle Boat Dash: Meet at the boat dock for an awesome race on the lake. Grab a partner and join them to see who is the fastest on the water. Please sign up using the sheet at the boat dock.

Friday, May 31

9 a.m. — Scavenger hunt: Meet the naturalists at the restaurant terrace for a list of fun things to find around the area. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest gatherers.   

11 a.m. — Owls Up Close: Meet Whitefield and Williams at the restaurant terrace for a presentation with the barred owl and become familiar with other animals that live around the park.

2 p.m. — Ozone Trip: Meet the naturalists at the front office for a trip to Ozone Falls. Please carpool (transportation will not be provided) to save space. Bring lots of water and sturdy shoes (strenuous hike). This 110-foot waterfall was chosen to be the sight of the film Jungle Book.

7 p.m. — Night Canoe Float: Join them at the boat dock for a journey filled with the sounds of the night as well as a sky full of stars. Please wear appropriate clothing for the possibility of getting wet. Availability is limited; sign-up sheets will be posted at the boat dock all week. Please make sure to sign-up using the sheet at the boat dock.

Saturday, June 1

7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. — National Trails Day: Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. Hikes will begin at 8 a.m. Meet Whitefield and Williams at the restaurant terrace for a fun day of hiking on the Plateau. Notice to participants: They  will have various hikes to choose from. Those will range from one to three miles of easy trails with plenty to see. Please bring water and snacks for the trail. Wear sturdy athletic shoes or hiking boots and clothing appropriate for the weather including a rain jacket or poncho in case of rain. Please meet at the restaurant terrace before each to leave for the trail head.

8 a.m. — Cumberland Plateau: one-mile easy loop.

10 a.m. — Pioneer Trail: three-mile easy loop.

2 p.m. — Byrd Creek Trail: two-mile easy loop

2 p.m. — Foxfire Newgrass Band: Bring friends and family to the restaurant terrace to enjoy live local music.
