Learn to defend yourself at Fair Park

CROSSVILLE — Everyone should know how to spring into action in defending themselves to keep from becoming the victim. Larry Potter, fifth degree black belt, works personally with each of his students and finds role playing very useful. He makes sure everyone is sure how to react without having to think, to defend their lives. Anyone can learn no matter their physical condition.

Larry said, “I do not teach classes; I am teaching people.”

He will be starting another 10-week self defense class on Fridays, starting Oct. 11 at 12:30 p.m.

Kelli Bottoms, the Cumberland County UT Extension Agent, is now teaching Take Charge of Diabetes classes every Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Learn better how to feel better with this disease.

A new Tai Chi class, Yang Long Style, with 108 movements will be instructed by Vicki Halfacre. She is excited about sharing this with other seniors because she knows how much it has helped her to feel better. It will be starting Sept. 30 and it will be held every Monday and Wednesday mornings, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The center also has a good Tai Chi class on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. with instructors Angie Bedard and Jack Brady. Get your tap shoes on and come dance with Billie Brannon in her Happy Feet Tap Dance class every Friday afternoon, 2 to 3 p.m. She loves to help teach beginners, so don’t be shy.

Dance your way to a healthier life style with ballroom dance lessons. Cheron Stenson and her new dance partner, David Sheffield, will be starting these fun classes Oct 15.

There is so much to do for all seniors at the Fair Park Senior Center. The center is at 1433 Livingston Rd. in Crossville and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit the website at http://www.fairparkseniorcenter.org to learn more or call 484-7416.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Cool-season lawn grass fertilization and soil tests

Recently, I got an inquiry about the right timing for homeowners who want to fertilize a cool-season lawn which has bare spots that need over-seeding. An email from a new resident in the Crossville area asked how to take a soil sample and where to have it tested. Since problems with the pH or fertility of the soil beneath can result in chronically thin grass with persistent bare places up top, testing the soil then correcting pH and fertility to match plant needs can be an important first step in maintaining your lawn.
