CROSSVILLE — Born in Long Island, NY, Frank Saxton began his career as a saxophone player at the age of 12. At 16, he was playing in jazz clubs and at 18 he became a member of the U.S. Army Band. When his contract ended, he returned to New York to play in many great Broadway shows and work at Radio City Music Hall.

Tired of New York high taxes, Saxton decided to move to Las Vegas working at hotels, lounges and convention shows over the years. He worked two years in the Frank Sinatra West Orchestra at Caesar's Palace.

He has played in shows for more than 70 top stars including Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis Jr. Saxton has appeared with numerous Big Bands, including Si Zetner, Larry Elgart, Bob Crosby and Jimmy Dorsey. He has traveled extensively and performed at many other places, but now calls Tennessee home, where he has recorded a new CD in Nashville, in which he sings and plays the saxophone. He also composes and arranges music for other acts. He can be hired for private parties in the home, or at social clubs. Saxton can be contacted at (859) 312-7658.

Saxton will be entertaining the seniors at Fair Park for the first of the month party this Friday, April 5, at 9:45 a.m. So if you are a senior 55-plus, you are invited to come and enjoy a great time with us.

Crime is always on the rise, and seniors are easy targets for criminals, but you can be better prepared to take care of yourself after training with Larry Potter in his Senior Self Defense Class. The 10-week class will start Friday, April 12 at 12:15 p.m.

No one likes to take pain pills, but you do not like to hurt either. Let UT Extension Agent for Cumberland County Kelli Bottoms show you what else you can do. She will be teaching a free six-week arthritis exercise class starting Wednesday, April 10, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Also, Cumberland Medical Center is proud to offer a Parkinson’s disease class free and open to all seniors in the county. David Manestar, MPT, will be the instructor. It will also be starting Wednesday April 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. Please sign up for these and other classes as well as future van trips at the front desk at the senior center.

You can always find something to do at your Fair Park Senior Center. It is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some extra activities at night, and is across the street from the Cumberland County Fairgrounds, at 1433 Livingston Rd. in Crossville. You can also visit the center’s website at http://www.fairparkseniorcenter.org to keep up-to-date on the latest programs and activities that are being offered, as well as on-line versions of the center’s monthly newsletter, “Newsline.”
