Hilltoppers honors those they serve with sweet treats

CROSSVILLE — Once a year the staff and managers devote an afternoon to recognizing the traits of each service recipient that are described like a candy bar. It is one of the most anticipated days of the calendar year. Folks leave feeling good, but unlike a momentary sugar rush, there’s no letdown later.

What is it about candy that reminds the Hilltoppers, Inc. managers of thier service recipients? For starters, the Jolly Rancher Award is presented to the person or persons who laughs the most. The Snickers Award is given to the best joke teller or jokester. For the person who’s out of this world, there’s the Milky Way Award. The Life Saver Award is presented to the person who’s always willing to help. The Kit Kat Award is given to animal lovers; Mr. Good Bar is awarded to the person who’s good at making friends. And so on and so on...

Before the afternoon was over, every single service recipient had been given a T-shirt, a special citation, an appropriate candy bar and the applause of staff and family. The Hilltoppers, Inc. family is proud to recognize the unique personalities of its service recipients.

Since 1975, Hilltoppers, Inc. has provided adults who have developmental disabilities with the support needed to live their lives to the fullest. The nonprofit agency provides residential and day services to more than 125 service recipients in 27 homes and an apartment complex. Its mission is to promote each person’s identity, autonomy, affiliation, attainment, safeguards, rights, health and wellness.
