Winter is cold and damp, but if you suffer from the pain of arthritis, it is at times even more unbearable. It is easy to just take a pain pill, but over time that can lead to more serious health problems. Have you ever asked yourself what else can you do?
In 1997, Dr. Paul Lam, a family physician and Tai Chi expert, worked with a team to create the Tai Chi for Arthritis program, which is accepted by the Arthritis Foundation of America and around the world. Studies have shown that this program reduces pain, prevents falls, while improving mobility and balance. It has also been proven to be helpful in heart disease, stroke, hypertension, breast cancer and its side effects, Parkinson’s disease, bone density and sleep problems. Depression lessens and your immunity increases, while your ability to do things and overall health improves.
Tai Chi is easy to learn. It consists of slow continuous whole-body movements like dancing. The movements are learned and follow one after the other. Utilizing mind and body together in flowing movements, which requires controlled breathing and mental concentration. Everything improves when you are more relaxed and feeling good about yourself. Instructor Angie Bedard recently became certified for the center in Dr. Paul Lam‘s Tai Chi for Health Institute Program. You can make a commitment for a better you this year by joining Bedard in her new Tai Chi for Arthritis class, which will be on Friday afternoons, starting Jan 24, from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. at the senior center. Please call to sign up. The cost is free. There is also another ongoing Tai Chi class, which meets every Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
The UT Extension Agent for Cumberland County, Kelli Bottoms, will be teaching a free arthritis exercise class, which is also recommended by the National Arthritis Foundation, on Mondays at 8 a.m. beginning on Jan. 27.
Ombudsman Attorney Maris Ferrian will be providing important information to seniors and answering questions this Friday morning at the center starting at 10 a.m.
Also, starting this Friday at 1 p.m. is your chance to get in on the beginning of another 10-week class of senior self defense with Marine veteran Larry Potter, who is also a fifth degree black belt. Wow! Everyone really enjoys this class. You will, too!
The holidays are over, and we all could use a good laugh to cheer us up. Now, you have the fourth annual Gong Show on Friday Feb. 21 to look forward to. So mark your calendars and tell your friends.
This year’s judges will be Crossville Chief of Police David Beaty, Comedian Donna Garrison and Crossville Fire Chief Mike Turner. It is always a real hoot, and they are currently looking for people who enjoy cutting up, laughing and having a good time to be in this year’s show. Just think outside the box!You and your friends can lip sync, act out a joke, anything for a laugh!
