DAR creates photo collage to commemorate Veterans Day

By Emmy Edwards / Chronicle contributor

To commemorate Veterans Day, Nov. 11, The Crab-Orchard Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution has set up a poster display of veterans who presently live in Cumberland County. The picture posters will be on display during the entire month of November at the First National Bank of Tennessee, Peavine Road Branch.

Created by chapter members during the last three years, the posters are a collage of vintage pictures depicting veterans dressed in the uniforms they wore while serving in our country’s military.

Many who have already viewed the posters have recognized their neighbors and family members as well as church, golf, or tennis friends. For example, Michael Eppolito recognized his grandfather who supervised “Rosie the Riveters,” the ladies who helped build military airplanes during World War II. Eppolito knew his grandfather served during the war but did not know, until he saw the poster, exactly what his grandfather did.

Any veteran who would like submit a picture to be included in the DAR veterans’ poster project can take their picture to the First National Bank on Peavine Road to be copied and added to a poster. Pictures are also being collected at the Art Circle Library downtown. Original pictures will be copied and returned to the library to be picked up by the owner. Please note that pictures submitted during November will be made into posters for display in 2010.

The posters now on display at the bank will also be displayed in the canteen at the Palace Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 21, during the DAR-sponsored USO Show. Two shows have been scheduled—a matinee at 2 p.m. and an evening show at 6 p.m.

During the USO Show, local performers will depict entertainers and historic figures from the 1940s through the 1960s. Proceeds from the show will support the Cumberland County Veterans Emergency Fund, established by the local DAR Chapter and administered by the Cumberland County Veterans Service Office, as well as other chapter historic preservation, education, and patriotic projects for the community.

Reserved-seat tickets for the USO Show are now on sale at the Palace Theatre for $10 while they last.
