Come see the little red caboose

June 29, 2009 06:05 pm

If you have driven by the Crossville Depot lately you will see the newest addition of a little red caboose. She was used by the conductor and trainmen as a home away from home to rest, eat and do paperwork. The bay windows on either side were used by the trainmen who would sit and watch for smoke or other signs of trouble from overheated wheel journals (called hotboxes). Cabooses are no longer used and our little red "choo-choo" needs some TLC.
Downtown Crossville, Inc. would like to invite the public to a meeting at the Depot on Main St. July 16, at 4 p.m. for a personal tour and close look of the caboose. Share your thoughts and recommendations for her final use. She also needs a name, so come with your ideas and voice your thoughts.
Special thanks go to the Rotary Foundation of Cumberland County who donated the purchase price, Bill Honeycutt and his crew for laying the tracks, and the city of Crossville for help with the moving costs. DCI also received a donation of original train horns, and a whistle stop sign, so if you have any train memorabilia you would like to donate, please bring it along.
