The Cumberland Mountain State Park’s Recreation Lodge will be the site for the last meeting of the Cumberland Neighbors and Newcomers Club until September. On May 22, members and guests will gather to enjoy a lunch catered by Big Boy’s Barbeque. Installation of officers for 2008-2009 will take place and a silent auction will be a fundraiser. Reservations are required. For more information or to make a reservation, please call Mary Ceurvorst at 707-0232 or Margie Lokey at 456-9595 before Thursday morning, May 15. All women in Cumberland County are welcome.
On April 24, members and guests gathered at Forte’s Restaurant in Tansi for their meeting and luncheon. A delicious lunch of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans and dessert was served after the invocation by Diane Treanor. There were 25 guests present and once again the state of Michigan was well represented. The lucky winner of the guest gift was from (you guessed it) – Michigan.
After lunch, Program Chair Barbara Draper introduced the guest speaker, Dennis Gregg, who is executive director of the Obed Watershed Community Association. He explained that their purpose is the protection and enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage of the Obed River Watershed. He also included a slide presentation of plants, shrubs, and trees native to the Cumberland Plateau and Tennessee.
Kathie Sherman informed the group that the used book sale conducted at each meeting since last September has proven to be very beneficial for the funds which the club will present to several charities in the county. Shirley Butka, nominating co-chair, presented the slate of officers for the next club year starting in September. There were four winners of a drawing and more lucky winners of door prizes which were graciously donated by Mayberry’s Furniture, Cumberland County Playhouse, Sterling Silver Jewelry, CMC Wellness Center, Wooden Acorn, Rudy ‘n Bellas Pet Grooming, Heartland Florist, Custard Cabin and Dave Kirk Automotive. Several miscellaneous donated prizes were also given out.
