Art Guild to host studio tour June 13

By Judy Kahoun / Chronicle contributor

Have you ever wondered what process an artist uses to goes to achieve the desired results for a painting, a sculpture, a photograph, or piece of jewelry? How does the artist move from a creative idea to a finished product? From research, creative thinking, assembly of materials, execution with the medium, to framing, hanging, mounting, or wearing, the artist develops individual style through life experience, personal vision, education, and constant practice of technique.

Visitors can observe elements of the process of several artists by participating in a tour through of their home studios. Sponsored by the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade, the June 2009 Studio Tour will be held Saturday, June 13. The Plateau Creative Arts Center, 451 Lakeview Drive, will feature additional demonstrations by two participating artists during the tour.

Admission to this event is $10 (high school and elementary students are free), and ticket sales begin May 11 at the Plateau Creative Arts Center. To purchase tickets with a credit card payment, call 707-7249 or mail your remittance to the Art Guild at the PCAC address. Tickets can also be obtained at the Village Green Mall from 10 a.m. to noon on May 18, May 26, June 1, June 8, June 11, and June 12.

Sharron Eckert and Judi Moenck will introduce tour participants to their art forms through demonstrations at the PCAC. Eckert sews long leaf pine needles with a coiling technique using various threads including raffia and waxed linens, and Moenck will have several pieces of handwoven beadwork jewelry in various stages of completion.

Other participating artists include:

• Sheryl Reeser, watercolor artist, will create a piece from drawing to painting, cutting a mat and framing. Visitors will also have the opportunity to stroll through the garden of Sheryl’s husband, Don Reeser, complete with fountain and fish pond.

• John Simms, a professional artist who has won many awards and exhibits in galleries throughout the U.S., will demonstrate the use of natural and artificial lighting to illuminate a subject and the difference between working from a live model VS a photo to create the painting.

• Jean Liberty, a self-taught sculptor, uses metal and Crab Orchard stone to create abstract sculptures. His designs range from table top size to the 14 foot tall piece in front of the Plateau Creative Arts Center.

• Cal Davis, an award-winning photographer, will show visitors his custom-built darkroom, cameras and equipment in addition to the finished photographs on display.

• Claudia Kirkpatrick, current president of the Art Guild and award winning artist, will demonstrate watercolors, oils, and mixed media. Visitors can also enjoy a walk through her perennial garden graced with wrought iron, colored glass, and statuary ornaments.

• Barbara Rogers creates colored pencil compositions with great precision in detail. Barb will be demonstrating her pencil drawings along with a display of several of her paintings.
