Fair Park Senior Center news

By Donna Rule / Chronicle contributor

Fair Park kicked off the first week of Older Americans Month with a special celebration for its participants. Proclamations were provided by the city of Crossville and Cumberland County to recognize and honor the achievements of the older Americans in the community, as well as a special ceremony to honor the volunteer teachers who contribute their time and talents each week. The celebration was followed by bingo and a free lunch.

During the month of May, Fair Park and the Cumberland County Chess Club will be sponsoring a special event — “Senior Chess Day” — on Saturday, May 24. Bill Hall, U.S. Chess Federation executive director, could be taking on up to thirty seniors in the royal game of chess (playing all at the same time!) at Fair Park from 8 a.m. until noon.

The personable Hall grew up in Cumberland County and is the current County champion, achieving that honor many times. There is absolutely no fee to play, but if you wish to participate, you must reserve a place since there are a limited number of boards available. To reserve your spot, contact William Davis at (931) 456-6675.

Spectators are encouraged and refreshments will be available, courtesy of Fair Park and the Cumberland County Chess Club.

Be sure to visit the center Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for more information on this and other new classes and trips that are now becoming available. You can also visit the center’s Web site at www.fairparkseniorcenter.org to keep up-to-date on the latest programs and activities that are being offered as well as on-line versions of the center’s monthly newsletter “Newsline.” Take advantage of the resources that Fair Park offers — get involved, and become part of the fun!
