Woodmen of the World representatives complete flag distribution to schools

By Frances Threet / Chronicle contributor

Woodmen of the World Lodge 900 held their regular meeting April 15 at the 127 S. Seniors building at 6 p.m. The business session was preceded by a covered-dish dinner that was enjoyed by all. The invocation and blessing on the food was given by Carol Kirkland and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Ron Mansavage called the meeting to order. The minutes were read, and a motion was made by Shirley Phillips and seconded by Rita Marvin to accept the minutes as read. The voting was unanimous. The treasurer's report was given by Rita Marvin. Mario Gambaccini made the motion to accept the report as read, seconded by Emil Nietzke, and the voting was unanimous.

A total of 21 people attended the meeting, nine of those being officers. Seven hundred hours of service were given to the community during the past month.

Youth camp will be held in Cumberland County again this year at the 4-H camp July 21-25. It is for ages 8 to 15. So, if you are a Woodman youth and want to have several fun-filled days, contact Travis Lowe, area manager, at 484-2272, or some of the field representatives and get your application turned in.

The scholarship committee chairman Tommy Cole reported that 114 applications have been received to be considered for the scholarship. The committee will meet on several occasions to review them and choose a recipient.

The flag committee chairman Mario Gambaccini reported that only 12 more flags are needed and then all the elementary school rooms in the county will have a flag in their room. Also, the history awards are being prepared for those students in various schools that have applied for them, and will be presented around graduation time. President Mansavage expressed thanks to Mario and Forest O'Dell for the work that has been done to accomplish our goal.

Join Hands Day was May 3, and the lodge did a program with the Plateau Pregnancy Center. Each member is asked to bring a gift for a newborn baby to the May meeting that will be May 20. A motion was made by Carol Kirkland and seconded by Tommy Cole to give a $100 donation to that organization. The voting was unanimous.

There being no further business, Emil Nietzke made the motion to end the meeting, seconded by Rita Marvin. The voting was unanimous.
