Jansen's artwork will be featured in May

Cumberland Artists for Creative Expression (CACE) will be welcoming Nancy Jansen, local silversmith, as the Featured Artisan of the Month at its next regularly scheduled meeting, Wednesday, May 7, at 10 a.m., at the Crossville City Hall.

Jansen has been a silversmith and jeweler for 40 years and says she loves her work. She chooses to work in silver for several reasons. She enjoys manipulating the metal. It is resistant enough to give her lots of time to think while she creates, yet malleable enough to respond to her ideas. Also, the field of silversmith is complex. There are always new methods to learn and new products to try. It is a field which stretches her mind and creativity. There are enough repetitive processes to occupy her hands at times when her mind needs to relax and daydream.

Her designs reflect two sides of her creative personality. One group is highly organized, with geometric elements, and reflects her love of order. The second group is very organic and reflects her love of nature and gardening. Often, the two sides of her personality overlap in the same piece. For example: a geometric earring with an organic texture. In each case her goal is to produce an item which is both beautiful and functional, and will enhance the life of its owner.

Silversmithing requires continuing education.

In July, Jansen will be attending an advanced class called “Anti-Clastic” at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. In 2007 she received a blue ribbon of excellence at the White Oaks Craft Fair in Woodbury. She also received a merit award last spring.

The collection of her work ranges from necklaces, bracelets, and earrings to a limited number of rings. She is open to making custom items.

Everyone is welcome to attend the CACE meeting on May 7 to learn more about the art of making beautiful creations in silver. Stay for information on the exciting plans for promoting the arts in Cumberland County, including the Studio Tours in July and the Fall Artisans Festival in September.
