    This is a multigenerational review: I am grateful for the assistance of my 12-year-old grandson and his aunt, my daughter, in commenting on Hairspray. This Broadway musical, based on the 1988 film by New Line Cinema, written and directed by John Waters, is a powerful addition to the Playhouse season.

    Hot dogs, watermelon, potato salad and fireworks, oh my! Believe it or not this weekend marks the 4th of July. The United States celebrates Independence Day to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th from Great Britain. Commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, baseball and speeches, the 4th also marks the unofficial halfway point of the summer season.

    Heaven Sent Pet Rescue has succeeded in placing cats and kittens into loving homes because of generous community support and the willingness of volunteers to foster animals in their homes. Kittens, especially, need socializing to become comfortable and well adjusted with humans. HSPR has a very successful placement rate due to the nurturing and stable environment provided by foster parents.

  • Cumberland Art Society to host glass-painting class July 7
    Mara Trumbo will conduct a class on One-Stroke Painting on Glass on Tuesday, July 7, from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Cumberland Art Society, 186A S. Walnut Ave., Cookeville. Her fee is $25 which includes all supplies. To register call (931) 526-2424.

  • Big Band Sound to perform patriotic concert July 11
    The Big Band Sound will feature a patriotic medley to honor America’s birthday, when it performs at the monthly dance at the Fairfield Glade Community Center on Saturday, July 11. The salute to the Red, White and Blue is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 per person.

  • Emerson is Palace artist of the month
    Multi-media artist Camilla Staton Emerson has chosen 25 pieces of her artwork for her one woman show at the Palace Theatre for the month of July 2009. Her choices include some of her most recent and largest works, many of which have not previously been displayed in the Cumberland County area. This show is free to the public and accessible at all times.

    It is so hot! How hot is it? It's so hot that farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs, the cows are giving evaporated milk, the potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter and salt and, finally, it's so hot that the birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.

    The Pleasant Hill Town Council held its adjourned June meeting Monday afternoon, June 22, in town hall. Mayor Olds called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. The mayor, vice mayor Al Dwenger, Robert Savage and Lisa Patrick responded to roll call. Following the usual moment of reflection, the minutes of the May council meeting were approved.

    A concert to benefit Jay Fox, gospel singer from Crossville, is planned for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theatre.

    One of my favorite Broadway productions, Hairspray, has rolled onto the main stage at Cumberland County Playhouse, and I am dyeing (get it?) to see it. Matter of fact, I have opening night tickets for the musical which includes such upbeat songs as "Can't Stop the Beat."

  • Auditions being held for Showtime at First Baptist
    Cumberland County Playhouse will hold readings and auditions on Wednesday, July 1, by appointment between 5-7 p.m., for women age 30-60 for roles in Showtime at First Baptist, the sequel to 2008’s Playhouse hit First Baptist of Ivy Gap.

  • Butterflies and fireflies light your days and nights
    Two of nature’s most spectacular events are now on display at the Head of Sequatchie unit of the Cumberland Trail. The Friends of the Cumberland Trail and the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail will open the historic Head of Sequatchie farm to the public, allowing for tours through a summer day and a summer night.

    Ms. Cam's Dance and Tumbling Studio's summer session is five days of fun classes for all ages. The session is set for July 6-10.

    The 127 Seniors met last Friday for coffee, pastries and lots of conversation. They missed the group that had gone to Cape Cod, but they managed to have a great time anyway! Gene Brown called the bingo, with prizes furnished by Buckeye Medical Equipment.

    October 8, 2003 was a day like any other when 16-year-old Kate Cutshaw got in the car and headed to class at East High School in Morristown, TN. In the next few minutes the day became unlike any she had ever lived. She reached down to change the CD and as she looked up the car crashed into a tree.

    Plans are in the works to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Cumberland Homesteads Community on Saturday, July 25. “Folks are really getting excited about it.
