Sixth-grade Frank P. Brown Elementary School student Cheryl Rodriguez is a first-place winner in the 2014 State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) Rise to the Challenge Scholarship essay and video competition. Cheryl wrote her winning essay on the topic of higher standards, and she will receive a $250 college scholarship.

Cheryl Rodriguez, a sixth-grader at Frank P. Brown Elementary, has been awarded a $250 college scholarship for her essay on the topic “What High Standards Mean to Me.”

Cheryl was one of three students from across Tennessee to earn the scholarship as part of the State Collaborative on Reforming Education’s Students Rise to the Challenge Competition.

The goal of the competition was to highlight students who think critically about their own education and the schools and districts that are taking steps to increase student achievement through high standards, technology, and innovation.

Cheryl’s essay highlighted her struggle to raise her reading abilities by more than two grade levels and the role that high standards played in pushing her to greater success. “High standards mean higher education,” she wrote. “The harder you push a student, the better they’ll do.”

In January, SCORE released the 2013-14 State of Education in Tennessee report, which identified maintaining a commitment to rigorous standards and assessment as one of the top priorities for K-12 education in Tennessee for the coming year. The Students Rise to the Challenge contest was created to add student voices to the conversation about Tennessee education.
