SOCM to meet Aug. 13

The Military Memorial Museum, at 20 South Main St. across from the courthouse, is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekends by advanced appointment only. Public transportation for Cumberland County

As the price for a barrel of oil inches toward $80, the urgency for a reliable and accessible rural public transportation system grows. Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency has been working on a public transportation plan. PSGA meets Aug. 15

Ice cream social set Aug. 26

The Thrivent Lutherans will be hosting an ice cream and pie social to benefit Neighbors Together's efforts to build a new and used discount store which will support their many programs. The date is Aug. 26 from 2-5 p.m. at the Community House in Pleasant Hill. There will be music, ice cream, and desserts. A free will offering will be accepted. Call 277-5088 for more information.



Cardiac Support Group meets Aug. 13

The Cumberland County Cardiac Support Group will meet on Monday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Wellness Complex, 130 Woodmere Mall. Discussion will include membership guidelines and cost for Air Evac. The Cardiac Support Group meets monthly and is open to anyone with cardiac problems and their loved ones. There is no charge for this meeting. It is sponsored by Cumberland Medical Center. Community Advisory Board forms

For those interested in becoming a part of a Community Advisory Board, there will be a meeting on Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 2125 Miller Ave. This board will assist the Department of Children's Services in linking resources for families and children within the community. Senior Bowling League forms teams

DAV hosts dinner Aug. 10

Disabled American Veterans #32, at 486 Sparta Dr., behind Kroger, is hosting a meatloaf dinner Friday, Aug. 10, from 4-7 p.m. Cost is $5 and includes meatloaf, baked potato, green beans, dessert and coffee/tea. Everyone is welcome.



VFW Post 5025 meets second Monday

VFW Post 5025 holds a meeting and dinner every second Monday of the month. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7. All veterans are welcome and the post is always open to new members. Cordell Hull pageants set Sept. 15

The Cordell Hull Festival Pageant has been scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Pickett County K-8 school gym in Byrdstown. Registration will begin at 2 p.m. for the age groups of infant through 8 years of age, with the pageants beginning at 3 p.m. Registration for ages 9-21 will be at 5 p.m., with the pageants beginning at 6 p.m. Dress competition will be formal. Fair pageants to be held Aug. 16

One Step Beyond meets Aug. 14

The One Step Beyond appetizer/dessert get-together is on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #2751, 1145 Genesis Road. Quilt lecture set Sept. 5

The Cumberland County Piecemakers Quilt Guild will host a lecture and trunk show titled "I Don't Have Enough Fabric" by Lyn Johnson on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Palace Theatre. The public is invited to this fascinating adventure into members' stash closets to learn how to use what you have and use up what you don't want. There will be a reception following the program.
