EDITOR'S BLOG: What's the best way to give a crime tip?

In the mail box this morning, I received the following. If you have a question, please send your question to the below e-mail address, or simply drop a note by the Chronicle office. We will do our very best to respond.
Crimestoppers
You should have a Crimestoppers link. More citizens might get involved if they could leave tips with a news reporter online. That way they are anonymous. I know I tried it. Without the common citizens' help, a lot of wrong doing will continue.

Tina,
Certainly anything that you would like passed on to police investigators can be sent to us and your identity protected under the Tennessee Shield Law that protects reporters' sources.
Anytime you provide a tip to Crimestoppers, you are instructed NOT to reveal your identity. The way this works is that Major Terry White will give you a reference number and that is the only way you are identified.
You retain that number and the only person who knows who that number is assigned to is you. If your tip proves to be correct, you or a person you assign can go to the bank, present the teller with that number, and leave with your cash reward. You do not have to identify yourself.
Crimestoppers has paid out a total of $2,125 for nine tips received in 2006.
So far this year, Crimestoppers has paid out a total of $1,225 for eight tips.
This makes a grand total of 17 cases solved or arrests made for $3,350. Average payout is $197.
You can visit the local Web site at www.crossvillecrimestoppers.com. Or, you can call the Crimestoppers hotline at (931) 484-7231.

EDITOR'S BLOG: It seems there are plenty of troublesome intersections

Thanks for your responses. Readers are sharing their ideas about my suggestion about a turn-right-on-red after 9 p.m. at night on West Ave. at Miller Bypass. Here are some other thoughts on the idea.

Mike,
How about the turn left off Lantana onto West Ave. I've been here about 20 years and this intersection is hard to turn just about any time of the day. Will the city ever correct this??

Mike,
As a 40-year resident of Sparta Dr., I sure am having a great deal of trouble working up sympathy for you people groaning about sitting a minute at a light.
I turn left there going to work every day. I often have to sit through at least two lights. Other alternative is going out of my way to get there. We had enough trouble getting that stop sign put up.
I saw a suggestion that Sparta Drive have a no-left turn. Is that fair for all of us who live here? Why can't people just obey the road rules? What is a couple minutes to us going out of our way just to get up town? Sorry!

EDITOR'S BLOG: Reader agrees with right-turn-on-red issue

Friday I asked readers their opinion on turning right on red after certain hours, say 9 p.m., at the intersection of West Ave. and Miller Bypass (known locally as Five Points).
Thanks for your responses. Here is what one reader wrote.

Mike,
I agree that you should be able to turn right on red at that intersection, especially late evening. People turn on the red at that light CONSTANTLY, just sit there and watch…needs enforcement. But, the enforcers run that stop sign too. Been there, seen that! And, why isn’t Sparta Drive a “No Left Turn?" A dangerous place.

Do you have a comment about this or other intersections in town? If so, drop me an e-mail at mmoser@crossville-chronicle.com.

EDITOR'S BLOG: Why can't I turn right on red?

I have often suggested that the stop sign on the southern side of West Ave. at 5 Points be changed to allow right turns on red after 9 or 10 p.m. at night. I feel pretty silly sitting at the red light, with no cars in sight, waiting for my light to turn green.
I understand the no-turn-on-red rule is needed to allow Sparta Dr. traffic to exit during daylight hours.
But when traffic dwindles down to a few cars, why not let motorists turn right on red?
What do you think?

EDITOR'S BLOG: More thoughts on robins

Mike, I enjoyed your BLOG about robins. I have a little more information about them for you. Tennessee robins do not migrate south in the winter. They move from yards and fields into heavily wooded areas with deep leaf litter.
The robins scratch through the leaf litter to uncover insects that have burrowed into the leaves for protection from the cold. Robins gather in flocks and roost in pine plantations or other thick cover during winter nights.
Since our house is in the woods and we raise white pines we get to watch the robins all year long. Anytime the weather warms up enough for insects to be on top of the ground the robin flocks will move back to open areas such as the court house lawn.
Thank you for your interest in wildlife.

Well, the robins arrived in town and days later we failed to reach the freezing mark, with snow and ice on our roads. Just think, only 32 days until spring.
I decided to check and see what The Old Farmer's Almanac said about the next several weeks.
"Other cold periods will be in mid- to late December and in early and late February. The snowiest periods will be in early January and in early and late February. Rainfall will be well above normal in the north and near or slightly above normal in the south.
"April will have near- or slightly below-normal temperatures, followed by an exceptionally warm May. Rainfall will be near normal in the north and below normal in the south."
I am curious as to what Crossville meteorologist Steve Norris has to say about this.

EDITOR'S BLOG: Is spring coming soon?

Last week I was surprised to see a robin hopping across the yard at home and was relieved to see the scouts were returning north. Can spring really be that far behind?
Monday Susan Hunter in Mayor Brock Hill's office called to let us know there was a flock of robins, over 100 strong, on the courthouse lawn. Unfortunately, I do not own a camera lens that would do a photo justice.
With weather reports of ice storms and blizzards in the north, and robins beginning their annual northbound pilgrimage, the signals are really confusing.
Throw in the groundhog factor which this year predicts four more hard weeks of winter. Will we have an early spring this year?
